Understanding Your Tax Obligations

Navigating Australian Taxation Office (ATO) requirements can be complex. Staying ahead of your BAS, Super Guarantee, and Company Tax Return obligations is key to a penalty-free financial year. Understanding these core dates helps you manage compliance and plan cash flow effectively.

Whether you're managing a Pty Ltd company or operating as a sole trader, knowing exactly what to lodge and when empowers you to focus on growth while we handle the deadlines.

Business Activity Statement (BAS)

A BAS is a form submitted to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) by registered businesses to report their tax obligations. This includes Goods and Services Tax (GST), Pay As You Go (PAYG) instalments, PAYG withholding, and other taxes. Most small businesses lodge their BAS quarterly.

Superannuation Guarantee (SG)

Employers must pay at least 12% of their eligible employees' earnings into a super fund. From 1 July 2026, "Payday Super" applies: SG must be paid on every payday and received by the employee's fund within 7 business days — replacing the old quarterly 28-day cycle. Late payments attract the Super Guarantee Charge.

Company Tax Return

Companies must lodge an annual tax return to report their income, deductions, and tax liability. For most companies lodging themselves, the deadline is usually 28 February or 15 May. However, using a registered tax agent can extend this deadline significantly.

PAYG Withholding

If you have employees, you must withhold tax from their pay and send it to the ATO. This is reported on your BAS/IAS. You must also provide payment summaries (or finalize Single Touch Payroll data) to employees at the end of the financial year.
